Music to grow old to

A certain cocaine jesus invited me to contribute to his handsome music review site "music to grow old to." Never one to miss a musical opportunity I gladly accepted and began by remembering the classic Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.

For a Christmas gift, I finally completed a project I've been working on for 2 years. Very embarassing to admit that it took so long. I sent my brother and his extended family ~50 CDs of music from the late 60s onward. It was a smashingly successful present for them to receive and for me to sing along as the copies were burned.

Finn - it still holds up today and for me he never quite regained those heights.

JJ - greetings young lady. CJ probably guessed I wouldn't be able to pass up the opportunity to write about music!

Ruk - so you were a punk in the late 70s! I missed the Clash and The Sex Pistols but saw The Jam, The Buzzcocks and The Boomtown Rats...

Grace - I think this could be quite fun, reviewing older material in the light of what has come since.

Morgan - 50 CDs! What a brilliant idea and I expect your brother and his family were quite delighted. I can imagine the excitement of examining them all and identifying their places in the history of modern music.

Finn - hopelessly over-rated I agree. Paved the way for what other bands produced later but hardly what you would call "timeless."

Zappa always scared me so I never really "got" him.

"Pet Sounds" really is timeless. Deeper and much classier. Now I need to go and sort out Sirreene!

Sirreene - you are a couple of days early young lady but I take your criticism squarely on the chin!! What's done is done, eh!

Listening to as much new music as I do only serves to remind me what a huge debt today's bands owe to the pioneers. So now and again I revisit theose pioneers and marvel at their bravery.

Long live the Ramones ;)

I was a young punk - I was 10-years-old when the Sex Pistols shot pop music in the head - but the richochet did get down to my age. I remember pogoing at the school disco at that age.

By the time I was 17 I called myself a fururist though:

Ruk - lovely conversation in your Jan '05 post, takes me back. I was a 70s teenager but I stoutly defended the genres I supported and haughtily flung interlopers from my pigeon-hole.

Finn - that young scallywag from "Joisey" is teasing us I fancy. I read an article on Edgard Varèse, he sounds rather avant-garde for his time. Like a 1920s Radiohead coming out with "Kid A." Questions duly answered my good man.

Transience - my father is barely 25 years older than me yet the culture gap may as well be a century. He disapproves of denim - I rest my case. Ziggy played guitar and that's good enough for me and for you.

Are those all your CDs??? If so, I'd enjoy reading reviews of more from the collection.

CJ & Finn - settle down, settle down...

Patry - I can't resist music so I buy the little rascals all the time. Watch this space.

this christmas heaven came in the shape of my son who gave me 40 quids worth of virgin vouchers. not that you can get a virgin anywhere these days for 40 quid but hey, enough with the tangents. just been to the shop and got myself the latest EDITORS CD, BLOC PARTY'S excellent debut, KATE RUSBY's 'The Girl Who Couldn't Fly', an old KATE BUSH, NICK CAVE and a ROXY MUSIC.

"heaven, i'm in heaven and the earth moves till i can hardly speak" (or whatever the damn lyric was)

oh man!!!!!!

SilvermOOn - now that's what I CALL a reaction! Salivate, drool, gaze and be useless, I know it's not me but the music that generates this effect!! This is not a family site at all so scream away in ecstasy all you like it is fine by me. So nice to hear excitement over music.

The personality issue is great, I too love colections of all kinds: tools, DVDs, trainers, paint tins etc... Glad you enjoy the filing precision also. I become very uncomfortable if they are out of order.

An addictive nature means expensive habits but I have very little left to give up in life so I allow myself the music indulgence. Hope you liked the MP3s. Burn baby burn...
